The following example illustrates the redesign of a Web page using Carroll’s Minimalist theory and other related web design strategies:

Problem: On the right is a screen shot of The WINDeX Search Engine located at http://windex.daci.net. This site allows software developers to submit shareware and freeware to be stored in their database. This page however has four serious design flaws:

  1. the banners occupy too much valuable space at the top of the screen

  2. "The Windex Index" image banner runs a lake ripple Java applet which is highly distracting

  3. the lake ripple Java applet significantly increases the time it takes to download the page

  4. the white text on a blue background is difficult to read, especially considering that the site uses four colors for text: red, blue, white and black
